You can feel the blister forming inside your boot. Another sigh. Focus on breathing. Focus on sensation. A drip of sternum sweat. Your knees are aching. Your back too. An occasional gust kicks dust into your face and tries to pry your coat out of your hands. Each one is thick with the smell of coal and carcass. A small rock has gotten into one of your shoes. You aren't used to holding your arms up this long. Your home-improvement days aren't as fresh as they used to be. A grasshopper leaps up and smacks your inner forearm. Its tarsus hooks into your skin just long enough for it to sink its mandible in for a bite. It falls back to the ground before you can do anything, then launches away. Your stomach aches with hunger. Your shoulders.. Your elbows... Your knees.. your feet.. you trip.
